Boys love anything to do with outer space -- rockets, games, toys, movies, and more. Give your tween a special treat and decorate his room in a special space theme.
What boy doesn't love space rockets, planets, and galaxies? Now you can decorate his room to match his enthusiasm for outer space. There are many things you can get, from decorations on the walls to bedding and much more. Out of This World WallsStart off by painting the walls a space-related color such as light blue, gray, or off-white. Apply glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling over his bed to give it a planetarium feel at night. You can find these wall stickers at most stores that sell bedroom decor. Also consider purchasing Wallies of the planets. You can try to position them as close to their actual relationship in the sky as possible. There are some wonderful wall borders with outer space themes that you can put on his walls. If you are not up to that, there is some really cool outer space artwork you can buy to hang on his walls. You can even hang ready-made murals that are applied to the walls like wallpaper. If you feel more adventurous and are artistic, paint a mural on the wall. Paint the walls a dark blue. Add planets and stars with maybe an astronaut or a spaceship. Get ideas for this from picture books at your local library. You might also consider sponge painting stars and moon rocks on the walls. There are all sorts of sponge textures available to create lifelike space objects. Out of This World BeddingFind space themed bedding by looking through catalogs of department stores and bedding stores. You can also find space themed bedding online at various retailers. Be sure to buy the matching curtains to complete the theme. If you prefer to forgo the theme bedding from stores, you can bring it all together by purchasing light blue sheets and pillow cases, and just footing the bill for a quality space themed comforter. Likewise, the curtains can be a light blue or silver color as well. Accessories That are Out of This WorldBuild a couple of shelves for your tween's wall, and decorate them with space stickers or by painting a tiny mural on them. If you can find them, purchase some already-made shelves that have a space theme. Put all of his special space toys and figurines on these shelves. Fashion a rocket out of a tall dresser drawer. Paint it white and add the words "NASA" down the sides of the dresser in gray with black outlines. If you position the dresser close to your tween's bed, it will look like a launch pad. Other accessory ideas can include:
There is no limit to the accessories you can add to a space themed bedroom. Be sure you listen to what specific items your tween is asking for, so you include some of those special requests in his room. Use your imagination, and you are sure to come up with other creative ideas to make your son's room a space odyssey. Because this is a theme that boys like for many years, chances are it will be around for a while, so you can be as elaborate or simple as you want. Find more Parenting Tweens articles on Suite101.
