Fans of the series by Stephenie Meyer will enjoy exploring the supernatural realm with these character-inspired games and activities.

If you throw a themed birthday party for a fan of the Twilight series that follows the romance between a human girl and a vampire, skip the plastic vampire teeth and incorporate elements of the books into your plans.

An appealing element of the vampire characters is their special abilities. Partygoers can test their own psychic abilities with the following activities.

A Mind Reading Game

In the books, Edward can read the minds of those around him. Before the party, have the birthday girl create a pack or two of Zener cards. On index cards, make five of each of the following designs: two straight lines that cross in the middle, three wavy parallel lines, a square, a circle, and a five-pointed star.

At the party, one person can act as the Sender, focusing on one of the images. On paper, participants note what design they think is being thought of at that moment. After going through all twenty-five cards, the Sender reveals the order of the cards.

Participants who got more than five, twenty percent, correct may have been reading the mind of the Sender.

Fortune Telling with Dice

For this activity, players ask a question aloud and then roll a dice. The number revealed may be a sign of the player’s future. Participants should remember that in the books, the psychic Alice stated that each action someone took could alter the future.

Rachel Pollack in Teach Yourself Fortune Telling (Henry Holt, 1986) suggests the following interpretations.

  • A roll of one indicates a favorable outcome, but the questioner should be cautious.
  • A roll of two suggests a need for improving relations with the people around her.
  • A roll of three indicates success.
  • A roll of four hints at disappointment.
  • A roll of five suggests a positive development in the situation.
  • A roll of six implies uncertainty.

Clairvoyance Game

In the books, the vampires can sense the presence of others at short distances. In this game, participants attempt to sense the movements of a person standing behind them.

Players pair up and stand approximately ten feet apart, facing in the same direction (so one person is staring at the back of the head of the other player). The player standing in back slowly raises and lowers one arm. When the player in front believes that the person behind is raising her arm, she too should raise her arm.

The vampires in the series break from the clichéd image of the monster with pointy canines and a cape. These games let birthday partygoers experience some of the mystery and magic of the supernatural world.
