Girls that are in those awkward “in between” years often feel that they do not fit in or do not belong. The tween years are hard and difficult even for the most well-adjusted child. That is where Discovery Girls comes in to play. Discovery Girls is a magazine with a complimentary website made especially for tween girls, ages 7-12. Real girls with real problems and issues create the magazine to help girls of this age connect and not feel so alone.

Discovery Girls History

The Discovery Girls magazine was first published in 2000 by a mom who was concerned about her own daughter not feeling like she fit in at school and around her peers. The mom was worried that her daughter would go through middle school feeling exactly like she did and she wanted to do something about it. After doing some research and talking to real girls, she discovered there was a need for such a magazine and seven years later, the magazine is still going strong. Girls from all over read this publication and it currently has a readership of over 700,000. This is a magazine and parents can feel safe knowing their daughter is reading and girls like it because it has them in mind, and is fun and entertaining.

Discovery Girls Magazine

Girls love magazines and at one time all that was available were the teen magazines that were really too much for a girl of this age. These magazines often deal with issues that these girls aren’t ready to face. That is the nice thing about Discovery Girls. One of most popular features is the Discovery Girl Star, where girls from all over the United States apply to take on a photo shoot and to be actively involved in the magazine. Another popular section of the magazine is the “How to Deal” that involves real life problems that girls this age encounter, such as how to tell your mom you need a bra, and how to deal with friends who aren’t nice all of the time.

Discovery Girls Website

The website reads similar to the magazine and has popular additional features such as blogs and fun quizzes that girls can take. There are also live polls, contests and giveaways and fun (and very clean and appropriate) videos made by girls. Lively discussions (such as “Are middle school girls old enough to date?”) also take place on the website. Parents can visit this website and find that it is completely safe for girls of this age. In addition, parents can also visit the website to order Discovery Girls products such as magazine subscriptions, and a variety of books.

Discovery Girls - Fab Girls Guides

These books hit hard issues that tween girls face and show them that they are not alone in struggles that they face in school, at home, and in social circles. For instance, the Sticky Situations book has two main characters, Carmen and Dallas. These characters give solid advice for girls who find themselves in situations such as:

Some other titles of books include Friendship Hardship, Getting Your Questions Answered, and Getting Through Tough Times.

Keeping watching the Parenting Tweens blog site for an upcoming contest where you could win all four Fab Girls books, the complete set, for the tween girl in your life.
